I don’t think I’m alone when I say that jean shopping can be absolutely traumatising. Finding jeans that actually fit well and feel good can seem impossible sometimes. And as the years press on what once worked may not anymore.

But we’re not giving up on jeans! The right pair is out there, you just need to know what to look for to best fit you and your body.

For me, comfort is key. Jeans should move with you, not against you. That’s why I always lean toward denim with a bit of stretch. It holds everything in, feels good on, and makes getting dressed that much easier. I for one do not need that stiff as a board denim holding me back!

Before you buy your next pair of jeans ready for the cooler months, here’s a simple guide to help you find jeans that work with your shape and make you feel ready for anything.

If you’ve got curves

Go for a high rise. They’ll sit nicely on the waist and help you avoid that annoying gap at the back.

Stretch denim is your friend. It’s just about everyone’s friend to be frank. Look for styles that support your shape without cutting in. A bootcut or straight leg helps balance your hips and create a smooth line.

If you’re tall

Most styles will likely suit you, but a wide leg can look especially striking. High rise styles work well too, giving a clean, elongated look through the leg.

Cropped lengths are worth trying, especially if they land just above the ankle. They give you the chance to show off a great boot or sneaker and can break up your silhouette. Just make sure the crop looks intentional, not like your jeans shrunk in the wash. If you know, you know!

If you’re petite

Mid rise jeans are a great option because they sit just right on the waist and help give the illusion of longer legs without cutting you off. Avoid styles that bunch around the ankle or have a heavy cuff as those little details can break up the line of your leg and make you look shorter.

Instead, go for a clean hem or a gentle crop that hits just above the ankle. It draws the eye up and creates a nice, uninterrupted line. A slim or straight leg works beautifully to streamline your silhouette without overwhelming a smaller frame.

If you carry weight around the middle

Stick with clean, simple styles. No bulky buttons or heavy detailing. And a trusty bit of stretch will smooth things out and keep you comfy.

A contoured high rise can be a game changer and give shape where you want it while helping you feel like everything in held in place beautifully.

If you’re straighter through the waist and hips

You might like to choose jeans that create shape. Try a tapered leg or a subtle flare at the hem to add a bit of movement.

Pocket placement can make a big difference too. The right pocket placement can do wonders here. Pockets that sit a little higher and closer together can give the illusion of curves.

Quick care tip

Once you’ve found the jeans you love, wash them inside out and as little as possible. Hang them in the sun or on the line to air out and freshen up between wears.

Washing too often can loosen the fibres, especially the elastane that gives your jeans that lovely bit of stretch. The less you wash them, the better they’ll hold their shape and colour.

The main thing

This cannot be overstated: Try stuff on. Sit down in them. Move around. Go on, give us a squat!

The best jeans will feel like they’re made for you. And when they do, they’ll give you that little lift. Not just in the backside, but in your mood too.
